 Eights fue el primer naturalista profesional que visitó la Antártida. Durante su vida escribió cinco trabajos científicos sobre la historia natural de la Antártida, referidos a temas tan diversos como la geología y la biología. Fue también el primero en recoger la araña de mar gigante y el anfípodo gigante.
 
Encontró el primer fósil registrado en la Antártida. Desde 1829 hasta 1831 prestó servicios como naturalista a bordo de los barcos cazadores de focas Penguin, Seraph y Annavan.
Eights encontró un fragmento de madera carbonizada, incrustada en ... conglomerado. Estaba en una posición verticl, de unos setenta centrímetros de largo y doce centímetros de diámetro de color negro y con una evidente estructura leñosa; los círculos concéntricos tan claramente visibles en su extremo superior. En la épocoa de Eights, los fósiles aún constituían grandes misterios.

James Eights was also an artist. His paintings of Albany provide important insight on life in Albany at the turn of the 19th century.
